Sweepstake Rules: The Checklist
Most sweepstake arguments come from rules nobody agreed up front. Agree these seven things before the draw and your sweepstake will run itself.
The Seven Rules to Agree
- What wins: the winner only, or also second and third? For a goalscorer sweepstake: first, next or last goal?
- Ties and dead heats: split the prize, or the earliest entry wins?
- 0-0 draws: add a "no goalscorer" entry, or agree there is no winner.
- Own goals and penalties: decide whether they count and who they count for.
- More people than entries: share, double up, or run a second sweepstake. See what to do when people share an entry.
- Late joiners: set a cut-off before the draw, because nobody should join after seeing the result.
- The prize: bragging rights, a small prize, or something silly.
Write It Down
Post the rules in the group chat before the draw. It takes a minute and settles most disputes later.
In SquadGames, the game modes (first, next and last goal scorer) set the winning rule for you, so there is one less thing to argue about.
Frequently Asked Questions
Each person is randomly given an entry and the owner of the winning entry wins. Beyond that, the group should agree what counts as a win, ties, prizes and late entries before starting.
Decide in advance. Common choices are splitting the prize or counting the earliest entry as the winner.
That is for your group to decide before the match.
